God On Trial

Another daily read that I get from Crosswalk.com is Chuck Colson's Breakpoint. Today he posted information about a movie on PBS called "God On Trial", that I found interesting. I hope to watch it soon. Just in case you had not heard about it, I thought I would post his entry. I am thankful that I love a God who allows us to wrestle with our faith but keeps on loving us unconditionally.

He Suffers with Us

PBS stations around the country are currently running a deeply sobering film that is a must-see for people of faith. Called God on Trial, the film tells the story of a group of Jewish inmates at Auschwitz who don't understand why God seems indifferent to their suffering. (Because of profanity, disturbing images, and other elements, the film is not suitable for children.)

The film begins on the "day of selection," on which some of the prisoners are chosen for extermination to make room for more prisoners. As the chosen ones await their fate, though some of the prisoners insist that God is still with them and that "suffering is a part of God's plan," many others feel abandoned and bitter. A young man named Moche complains, "[God] should be here, not us. . . . We should put [God] on trial; then maybe He'll hear us."

So the prisoners decide to bring a charge of "breach of contract" against God for breaking His covenant with the Jewish people. What follows is a compelling exploration of suffering, sin, and faith.

An older man named Kuhn insists, "This is a test of our faith. . . . The point is to keep faith." He even suggests that the Jews have broken the covenant themselves by forgetting their Scriptures and disobeying God's law. But as Kuhn's son Mordechai points out, the new prisoners who have just arrived are devout followers of the Torah, and yet they're being punished along with the Jews who have lapsed from their faith.

The arguments go on and on, covering such subjects as what crime they might have committed, whether the punishment is proportionate, why their torturers thrive if God is just, and whether there might be some possible redemption or purification that will come from their suffering-the kind of questions that people of faith have always wrestled with. They even face the possibility that God has withdrawn His favor from them and made a new covenant with the Nazis.

The arguments are hard to hear and the film is very hard to watch. Not because we haven't heard arguments against God before-many of us have been hearing them and debating them for years-but because we hear them in a situation like this, among men who have so much at stake. As one character remarks, appeals to reason mean little in a world that seems to be run by madness.

But this makes it all the more meaningful when, even though they cannot understand God, they realize how desperately they need Him. One young father who had his three little boys taken from him surprisingly speaks in favor of God: "I know He is here, even though I don't understand Him. . . . Maybe God is suffering with us." Even when they feel furthest from Him, God is embodied in the sacrificial love of some of the prisoners.

I don't want to give away too much here, but I recommend that you watch the film if it airs on your local PBS station, or pick up a copy of the DVD, which will be released in January. Consider watching it with your church group or a close circle of friends. Don't be afraid to wrestle with the emotionally painful and intellectually challenging questions about God and suffering-and how it could be, possibly, that God suffers with us.

Holidays and Family

I think the time that I really regret that our family is so far apart is at the holidays. This will be Steve and mine 20th Thanksgiving together. During those 20 years we have spent 8 with family members other than my mother and father and never has our entire family been together for Thanksgiving. It even gets worse for Christmas. We have spent 4 with other family members. I get really envious when I hear about families that all get together for one or the other and even more so for those who get to do both!
I understand that when it comes to my family we live far apart (Olympia, Washington, Denver, Colorado and West Monroe, Lousiana, Omaha, Nebraska) and that complicates things. But you would think every 5 years or so we could all get together?? If it were up to me we would, but I can only convince Steve to travel(that in itself is no easy feat)not everyone else, and other family members are concerned about the weather and traveling. So they would rather stay home than risk the "what if's". And when it comes to Christmas my brothers never want to be away from their own homes, first it was for their kids, now it is their grandkids. So even if we travel to one place, we don't all get together. So if you are reading this join my pity party and say "Awh". Then if you are blessed to be with your family say a prayer of Thanksgiving and don't take that time for granted.

Here's an addendum: Our second Christmas, I convinced Steve to go to my parents who at the time they were living in Parma, Idaho. I assured him that the weather would not be a factor. Well...wouldn't you know they had the worst snowstorm they had in 30 years and it broke the gas main so there was no heat in the house! They did not have a fireplace either. So we decided to go to the movie in a neighboring town just to get warm. When we went to get in the car the battery was dead. My father plugged it in downstairs and put a replacement in the car. But when Steve went to start the car he flooded it so we had to go back into the house which by then was smoke filled, because the battery had caught on fire. My dad grabbed the battery and through it out of the back door into the snow bank. We all got a good laugh. We were thankful that Steve flooded the car, otherwise we would have left and the house would have burned down. Anyway...mention traveling at the holidays and Steve is quick to remind me of that fun time!

Psalm 145

This morning as I was getting ready for worship I was listening to a sermon by Charles Stanley. I listen to him every week as I think he just has such practical lessons. Steve and I are excited that we will be doing an Alaskan cruise with him this summer. Anyway, this morning his sermon was on Psalms 145 and gratitude. He stated that you don't have to feel like thanking God but you do it anyway. Our thanks isn't motivated by our cirucumstances but by our knowledge of God's goodness.
There is not anything that happens to me that has not been through God's hands first and for that I can be truly thankful. I came home and read Psalm 145 and think it is probably the way I should start everyday, reading this Psalm as there is a wealth of comfort in this Psalm. Hope you will be blessed by it as well.

1 I praise your greatness, my God the King;
I will praise you forever and ever.
2 I will praise you every day;
I will praise you forever and ever.
3 The Lord is great and worthy of our praise;
no one can understand how great he is.

4 Parents will tell their children what you have done.

Twilight

So...I don't know about you but I have wondered what all the hubbub has been about Twilight. I have pretty much ignored it thinking it is just another version of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer", but apparently I am wrong. I didn't know the series was written by a Mormon who has made a point to maintain some ethical standards. So, just in case you also didn't know much about the movie, I thought I would post this review from "Ignite Your Faith" which I found on a link to Christianity Today Magazine (which by the way reviews movies all the time).

What Shines in Twilight by Stacey Lingle
"Some of my Christian friends are concerned about these books centering on "demonic" creatures. Aren't vampires evil? Shouldn't we stay away from anything Satanic? These are good questions, and it's so crucial to be careful about what we feed our minds.
As I read the Twilight books, I found that the vampires in these books don't fit the classic vampire mold. No protruding fangs, no coffins, and they're not repelled by garlic or crosses. They have no dark mission, demonic connection, or contact with the spiritual underworld. They aren't "spiritual beings," but are more like humans with a horrible contagious disease. The only thing "vampiric" about them is that they feed on blood—which of course is forbidden by the Bible. Other than their thirst for blood, these vampires operate very like human beings. They have free will. They can choose to do good or to do evil. Edward and his family choose to do good because they believe that even vampires are not exempt from ethical standards. Unlike most vampires, this clan doesn't feed on humans, but they do drink the blood of animals because they must to live. Edward's father, Carlisle, even believes that they have souls and an afterlife. To me, it seems the vampires in these books are not demonic at all, but are metaphors for the human experience. These vampires' darks sides represent the very real monsters inside each of us. They are fighting against the temptation to do evil, which is what we as humans have to do everyday.
Nevertheless, spirituality is certainly relevant to the reading of Twilight. After all, part of the allure of the Twilight series is that it is "other-worldly." It's a fantasy. Sorry ladies, but there aren't really gorgeous, shimmering, chivalrous vampires and werewolves out there waiting to complete your life and mine. Yet the idea of them is captivating. Why? Because we are, essentially, spiritual beings. We know this world is not all there is, and we long for more. But fantasies like Twilight can become a distraction to our faith when we allow them to become a replacement for what we should be "fantasizing" about—spending eternity in the presence of God.
Bella is a clear example of someone who has misplaced her affections in this way. In her whirlwind romance with Edward, she directs all her love and desire toward Edward. She is so single-minded that the she doesn't even blink at the thought of giving up her soul (which is what would happen if she became a vampire so that she could be with Edward forever). This should strike us Christians as seriously wrong. She is choosing romantic love over her soul? As Jesus said: "What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?" (Matthew 16:26, NIV) Now Jesus wasn't talking about becoming a vampire, but he was saying that our soul is the most important thing about us. Our soul, and our relationship with God, should be something we treasure and nurture, not willingly damage or discard for an earthly high.
One last spiritual note: The books don't have a great amount of God content (no major characters are believers), but the stories also don't discourage or deny God's existence. In fact, the characters live in a world—like that of most vampire fiction—where God is present. For instance, Carlisle, the respected leader of Edward's vampire family, mentions at one point that it wasn't his choice to become a vampire and lose his soul. For most vampires it isn't and so he hopes there's a way they can be saved and enjoy an afterlife."

Really Ooked

Okay, so "ook" isn't in the dictionary, but tonight it is the only word I can think of to describe the way I felt on my way to a ladies retreat meeting tonight. I was pulling up at the corner of Beltline and Plano Road and saw a male and female walking and thought to myself "it isn't really cold enough for the male to have a scarf wrapped around his neck", until I realized it was a boa constrictor!! I immediately reached over and locked my door! After all what if it had jumped off his neck and into my car through my closed window?????? Anyway who knew you take snakes for a walk? Whatever...there is no way I could wrap a snake aound my neck!!

It's Too Early

Steve's Sunday Morning Bible Class is called "We Know It's Early" but this post is not about that. Tonight as I was driving home from dinner with friends, I saw three houses decorated and lit up for Christmas. I absolutely LOVE Christmas, but lights up before Thanksgiving?? I think it is too early. I want to enjoy one holiday before getting ready for the next. Guess I am just wierd that way. But only 7 more days and I can start playing the Christmas music.

Here He Comes

In our daily Bible reading we read the parable of the ten virgins. Then Greg Laurie's devotional happened to be on the same topic. "We have all played the childhood game, Hide-and-Seek, where one person closes his or her eyes while the others hide. My favorite part of the game comes after you count to 20 and get to yell, "Ready or not, here I come!" In a sense, that is what Jesus is saying in the Parable of the 10 Bridesmaids: "Ready or not, here I come!" In this parable, Jesus compares His second coming to 10 bridesmaids who "took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom" (Matthew 25:1). Five of the bridesmaids had oil in their lamps and were ready. The other five had no oil in their lamps and weren't prepared to meet the bridegroom. The five unprepared bridesmaids went to buy oil at the last minute, the bridegroom appeared and took everyone who was ready in with him to the marriage feast.
Suddenly, the five unprepared bridesmaids found themselves locked out and saying, "Sir, open the door for us!" (verse 11). But the bridegroom could only reply, "I don't know you!" (verse 12). This parable is a warning to be ready for the Lord's return. You might describe it as a wake-up call from God."

So today I am asking myself am I prepared? Do I live each moment of each day totally ready for my bridegroom to come? I hope so, but I am afraid not always as much as I should. How do you prepare yourself?

God's Faithfulness

Our 5th grade Bible class lesson today was about God keeping His promises. I asked five of our "senior saints" to come in and share what their favorite promise of God is and how He has been faithful to keep that promise in their lives. I think it is so important that our young people hear the faith stories of those that have gone before them. This was such a blessed time today as the children paid such good attention to the senior saints as they shared. Hopefully, through their testimonies our children had a few roots grow a little deeper.

Here are the verses that were shared:

Sheridan-Ephesians 5:15 "Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise." Sheridan told the kids that this verse helps him to remember at all times he is representing Christ no matter how someone else acts towards him.

Lynda-John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son." Lynda told the kids that if God loved her this much then there is nothing that will happen to her that He will not be concerned about. She says when your young "everlasting life" seems like a very long time away, but as you get older you realize that it could be soon. When she had a heart attack she was not afraid because she knew even if she were to die she would live with God forever.

Margie-1 Peter 5:7-"Cast all your cares on Him for He cares for you." Margie explained that her family did not go to church when she grew up and a teacher invited her to church and when she was baptized she tried to talk to her father, but he told her he did not want to hear it. She prayed that something would happen that would change his mind, and sometime later she and Bill had a little boy named Scottie who had Down's Syndrome. When her father saw how lovingly she and Bill cared for Scottie and how at peace they were, he wanted to be baptized. She talked to the kids about the importance of prayer and that sometimes it make take awhile before you see God's answers, but He always answers.

Denola-Hebrews 13:5-6 "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,"Never will I leave you;never will I forsake you."
and Psalms 51:10 "Create in me a pure heart, O God,and renew a steadfast spirit within me." Denola shared with the kids that when she was a child her parents had her memorize a verse and this was the one she chose. She is so thankful that over her life she has known that God is always with her. She had open heart surgery and was able to go through it with peace because she knew God was right there beside her.
One of her favorite hymns is "Purer In Heart O' God" so the Psalm verse has always been important to her for her growth.

Barbara-Told the kids she too was not raised going to church and lived in a very small town in New Hampshire where there was only one school and 21 in her graduating class. A friend needlepointed a frame for her that had the Serenity Prayer on it and that prayer has got her through a lot of difficult times especially the past few years when she had to have her leg amputated.

I pray that I will walk in the footsteps of these precious saints and love and serve my Father who is forever faithful to His promises.

Why Didn't They Ask?

So I am wondering why one of the questions we did not hear at the Presidential debates was "what Executive Orders would you put in place?". Guess in my naivity I didn't know the President could just put things in place without Congressional approval (not that he wouldn't have it anyway).

It really bothers me that not only is Obama going to push the pro-abortion agenda here in the states, but one of his first orders will be to rescind the Executive Order that President Bush established in 2001.

"The prohibition on federal funding for international family-planning agencies that provide abortions -- or counseling and information about abortion -- even in countries where the procedure is legal. This policy, known as the Mexico City initiative, was initially put in place by Ronald Reagan and reaffirmed by the current president's father. Bill Clinton removed it in 1993; President Bush restored it two days after taking office in 2001."

We are in a financial crisis here, but we are going to fund abortions overseas??

He will also probably rescind the ban on stem cell research on embryo's even though it has been proven that the same research can be done on adult with even better results.

"The ban on federal funding for research on new lines of embryonic stem cells. In August 2001, Bush limited government funding to the embryonic stem cell lines then in existence and prohibited any funding for development of new embryonic stem cell lines"

"Put in place in August 2001, the policy prevents taxpayers from paying for new embryonic research that involves the destruction of human life. Bush directed most of the public funding for the science to adult stem cells, which are more ethical and have proven more effective than their embryonic counterparts.

Embryonic stem cells, in addition to including the destruction of days-old unborn children, has yet to work in humans because of significant problems after they are injected into the body -- ranging from the growth of tumors to immune system rejection issues.

The Washington Post reports that the transition team members are working with top special interest groups and leading pro-abortion members of Congress on prioritizing the executive orders that Obama will reverse."


These quotes are in several of the major newspapers such as the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times. I just wonder what else is coming down the pike that we absolutely have no say in because America had their say in nominating Obama as our next president? Plenty of reasons for us not to let up on our prayers.

House Markings

Steve and I have taken a few meals to people in the past couple of weeks and have been suprised at how poorly marked addresses are. We actually almost delivered to the wrong house because GPS said "arriving at your destination" and we were on the porch when we finally saw the number and we were two houses off. I wonder if anyone with a poorly marked house ever worries that emergency vehicles would not be able to find them easily in an emergency? Guess I won't complain about paying the $10.00 for the curb markings the next time we are asked.

Another Song Question

So last night at Oasis we sang "Jesus Is Coming Soon". Does anyone else have trouble singing an upbeat "many will meet their doom"?

Just wonder what the writer of that song was thinking. Was doom the only word that rhymed with soon? It's not like I don't know that people will meet their doom when Jesus comes again, but singing about it in the midst of praise just doesn't seem right?

A Few Laughs

Sometimes I think my posts are just a little too serious. Why? Because I am mostly a serious person, but I do enjoy a good laugh, and thought this blog needed some laughs today, so here are just a few I found today. Hope they make you chuckle a little too.

Father Boudreaux and pastor Thibodeaux were fishing on the side of the road. They thoughtfully made a sign saying "De End is Near! Turn yourself around now before it's too late!," and showed it to each passing car. Well this one car that passed didn't appreciate the sign and was shouting at them: "Leave us alone you religious nuts!" All of a sudden they heard a big splash, looked at each other, and Father Boudreaux said....."You think we should just put up a sign that says: 'bridge out' instead ?"

Tragically, three friends die in a car crash, and they find themselves at the gates of heaven. Before entering, they are each asked a question by St. Peter. "When you are in your casket and friends and family are mourning upon you, what would you like to hear them say about you?", asks St. Peter. The first guy says, "I would like to hear them say that I was a great doctor of my time, and a great family man." The second guy says, "I would like to hear that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a huge difference in our children of tomorrow." The last guy replies, "I would like to hear them say...... LOOK!!! HE'S MOVING!!!!!"

Thank You To Our Veterans

I have to admit that most Veteran's Days I am pretty oblivous to the reason we celebrate it and go on about my business without giving much thought or thanks for the freedoms we have in America. Neither do I contemplate the men and women who have given their lives so that I can have the blessing of living in this "land of the free and home of the brave". Ihope you will take a minute to join me today in saying a prayer of thanksgiving for all of those who have served or are currently serving in our Armed Forces.

All to Jesus I Surrender

Is it just me, or does anyone else have trouble singing this song? Most of the time I cannot sing this song because I cannot honestly say the words. I wish I could, but I know I don't surrender all. This would be how I need to sing the song.

I usually listen as other people sing this song, wishing I could sing it and mean it.
I still have a long way to go before I can sing it, but perhaps next time I sing it I will be able to say I have surrendered a little more.

Don't know about you, but this hit home for me. I constantly struggle with wanting to hunger and thirst for God's Word. Seems like it is just not as easy for me to open as my computer or as this post says my cell phone.

Cell phone Vs. The Bible

Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our
cell phone?

What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?

What if we flipped through it several time a day?

What if we turned back to go get it if we forget it?

What if we used it to receive messages from the text?

What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it?

What if we gave it to kids as gifts?

What if we used it when we traveled?

What if we used it in case of emergency?

This is something to make you go....hmm...where is my Bible?

Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don't have to worry about our being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill.

Makes you stop and think 'where are my priorities? And no dropped calls!

Letter to President Elect Obama

So...I also wrote a letter to President Elect Obama.

"Dear President Elect Obama,

Last night in your acceptance speech you said “I may not have your vote, but I hear your voice and I am your President too.” I hope that that is a true statement. I did not vote for you because you say you are pro life, but will not make sure that life is protected. You say that you believe marriage is defined as between a man and a woman, but you will not take a stand to protect our families. You assumed I was more concerned about money (tax refunds) than about being “one nation under God”. I am trying very hard to follow the Lord’s Word in Luke 6:37 and not judge you.

I just wanted to let you know that much more important than hearing my voice, is that I pray that you will hear God’s voice. Today we received a message from the Presidential Prayer Team that we have been a part of for the past eight years. We wondered if the prayer team that originated with George Bush would now disband. We are glad that it is not and they are now telling us specifics as to what we can pray for you. 2 Timothy 2:2-3 tells me that I am to pray for you and I do commit to do so.

My specific prayer is that you will seek the Lord and His will for this great nation. God has already used you to show how all of His children are important and equal. I do rejoice that you have been able to show us all there is nothing that is impossible in America. So I am hoping you will also lead the way in showing what it looks like when a country does put God first. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says ”If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” This verse indicates that a country can turn from God and need forgiveness and lose His blessing.

Every speech I heard you make you closed by saying “and God bless the United States of America.” So I am asking you Mr. Obama to please protect the rights of our unborn children. I am also asking that you will stay true to your word “not to be a Democrat but an American” and protect our heritage of family by not supporting the homosexual agenda.

Thank you for listening to this one American’s voice. I know that God will bless America if we keep Him and His ways at the center of all we do. May He bless you with the wisdom you will need for the hard decisions ahead."

Letter to President Bush

Just thought I would share with you the letter I wrote to President Bush last night.

Dear President Bush,

As I sit here watching the election results, my heart is sad. I am sad that the American people have been blinded by what is temporary and have lost focus on what it means to be “one nation under God”. That getting more money in their pockets was more important than preserving the sanctity of life or preserving family by supporting traditional marriage. The only hope I have is that 2 Chronicles 7:14 tells us that when we turn from our wicked ways and pray that the Lord will heal our land and bless us once again.

I just wanted to take time to write to you and thank you for the way that you have served our country as President. I appreciate all that you and Laura have sacrificed to help make this country a better place for us all. I know that things have not been easy for you, and I know that there are many things they are blaming you for. But, we know that with the Democratic control of Congress that you did not have the opportunity to fulfill your dreams.

I have been privileged to be part of the Presidential Prayer Team for the past eight years and have prayed many times that God would protect you and help you stand for His ways. President Bush, I appreciate the way you have maintained your integrity and the way you have upheld your faith. While this country may not reward you, our God will.

Thank you President Bush. I pray that the Lord will bless you with an enjoyable retirement. May you continue to find ways to serve Him. May you and Laura continue to have a blessed life as you enjoy your daughters and your future grandchildren. Suit Up

Interesting that the past few weeks I have been in the midst of studying about spiritual warfare on a couple of different fronts. We had a discussion several weeks in our Life Group and then the past two weeks it has been the topic of our lessons with the 5th grade Bible class I help teach on Sunday morning. The challenging part about teaching kids, is that you so much want them to get what you know now at their age so they will be further ahead in their walk than you were at their age. Yet, the truth is this walk takes maturing and those sweet kids still have many many lessons to learn before they are mature in their faith. Never the less, I think it is important that they understand what it means to be covered in the armor of God. In one of the devotional thoughts I get by email that was the topic today...spiritual warfare...and Greg Laurie can definitely teach it a lot better than me.

Suit Up!
Use every piece of God's armor to resist the enemy in the time of evil, so that after the battle you will still be standing firm. (Ephesians 6:13)
When the apostle Paul wrote his letter to the Ephesians, he was chained to a Roman guard. So when we come to his description of the armor of God beginning in chapter 6, it's worth noting that Paul had a lot of time to observe Roman armor. There it was, 24 hours a day: breastplate . . . helmet . . . shield . . . sword.
This description was not given in a haphazard manner off the top of Paul's head to pass the time. Rather, these words are inspired by God. There is significance behind every word Paul attached to each piece of armor.
Paul identifies six pieces of armor altogether. The first three--the belt, breastplate, and shoes, were for long-range protection and were never removed on the battlefield. The second three--the shield, the helmet, and the sword--were kept in readiness for use when actual fighting began. So we see that each piece was important.
After all, you could wear your helmet, breastplate, and shield, but without a sword, you would find yourself in the unfortunate position of only defending or holding ground. Or, you might be wearing your sandals, your belt, and have your sword in hand, enabling you to attack enemy strongholds, but you would quickly lose what you gain due to inadequate defense.
We need all of the armor. It is not for us to pick and choose; it is a package deal. God has given us clear and defined spiritual weapons to fight with. Understanding what they are and how to use them can make all the difference in our spiritual battles.

Election Thoughts

So since the election is on all of our minds I thought I would post about it today. I have heard so many people say "God's Will, will be done in the election. Whoever He wants to be president will be president." I disagree. I don't think whoever God wants to be president will be president. It will be whoever the electoral college votes for. I think He will allow us to make a mistake and then use that person for His purposes. Unfortunately, His purposes could be to bring us all to our knees. America cannot be surprised if that happens when we have moved further and further away from the heart of God. I am among the guilty who has allowed prayer to be removed from school, the ten commandments to be removed from buildings, homosexuality to become an acceptable alternative lifestyle, not standing up for the rights of the unborn and on an on it goes. Did you know that teachers in the Plano school district have been told they cannot wear crosses as jewelry,but muslim teachers can still wear their hijabs? It's another example of the way we are moving away from God's heart. I'm not apathetic, I am just uninvolved in making a difference. I do take great hope in 2 Chronicles 7:14 that God will give us another chance when we fall to our knees and pray and seek His ways.

I liked this list that Anita sent today in an email. It does give us all hope.


TEN PREDICTIONS NO MATTER WHO WINS THE ELECTION:

1. The Bible will still have all the answers.

2. Prayer will still work.

3. The Holy Spirit will still move.

4. God will still inhabit the praises of His people.

5. There will still be God-anointed preaching.

6. There will still be singing of praise to God.

7. God will still pour out blessings upon His people.

8. There will still be room at the Cross.

9. Jesus will still love you.

10. Jesus will still save the lost.

Knowing Jesus

Today in my Bible reading Jesus healed a woman who had a spirit who was causing her to have a bent back for 18 years. After he healed her the Pharisees were angry because He healed her on the Sabbath. Just boggles my mind that they could stand there and not be amazed at his healing power but quibble about when He did it and therefore totally miss who He really was.

Thought this article by Chris Tiegreen showed me how I do the same thing all the time. This is from the book "At His Feet".

"One of the most mind boggling tendencies of human beings is to zero in on the trappings of our faith at the expense of its substance. This applies to all faiths of all times, but never as grievous as when we do this with the Son of God. In the story in Matthew 12, the Pharisees are more concerned with the sabbath and the temple than they are with the Lord of the Sabbath and the One who inhabits the temple. They major on the details but miss the big picture.

We also have peripherals that we obsess about. On Sunday mornings we often experience worship services without experiencing worship. We sometimes participate in Bible Study without fellowshiping with the Author. We do works of ministry without relying on the one who would minister through us, if we let him. We pray our prayers without conversing with the Spirit who inhabits them and hears them. We are so prone to digress from a relationship with Jesus Himself to the religion that makes Him its object, that we must guard ourselves daily. Someone greater than all our activities and beliefs is here."

So what do you think? Is there a difference between practicing Christianity and knowing Christ?

Another Year, Another Struggle

I have posted before regarding my theology on Halloween, so I won't do it again this year. I do know that Halloween can be redeemed for good and the innocent fun of children, but I do think it is wise to be cautious about all the trappings of Satan on this particular holiday. I read this article today by Greg Laurie and thought it was applicable for today's post.

In His Strength
"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might." (Ephesians 6:10)
Just as police officers call for back-up when they sense that danger may be imminent, the first thing we must realize about spiritual battle is that in our own strength, we are no match for the devil.
I think a healthy respect of our adversary is in order for believers today. We don't want to underestimate him, nor do we want to overestimate him. We want to accurately assess who he is and what his abilities are.
We need to recognize that he is powerful; we don't want to try and take him in our own strength.
When I hear some preachers on television or the radio calling the devil silly little names, laughing at him, or making jokes about him, I remember what Jude 9 says: "Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, 'The Lord rebuke you!' "
Even the high-ranking Archangel Michael did not dare to condemn the devil with mockery. He simply said, "The Lord rebuke you!" There was a respect of the enemy.
The reason we need to "be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might" is because Satan wants to get us away from that. It is our power base. He wants to separate us from God, because the moment he gets us away from Him, we are open prey. Thus, the devil wants to put a wedge between God and us.
The only power that can effectively drive Satan out is the power of Jesus Christ. Be strong in the Lord.

God's Amazing Love

We had another great lesson in Ladies Bible Class today. We studied Psalms 130:
Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD;
O Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.
If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.
I wait for the LORD, my soul waits,and in his word I put my hope.
My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning,
O Israel, put your hope in the LORD,for with the LORD is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.
He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins.

Isn't it amazing how hard Satan works to steal the joy of this truth from us? Most of us live in some regret, but God keeps no record of sin. We think we are unloveable, unforgiveable, unworthy. The fact is those are truths, it is only because God is love, forgiveness and worthy that we are. There is not one thing in our past that God can not redeem for His good and His glory. Isn't that what He promises in Romans 8:28??

So next time you are contemplating whether God does indeed forgive all your sin, just ask yourself "how much of all is ALL?" We then can walk in hope as the victor and not the victim and others will see our lives and say "I want what they have". So praise God for His unfailing love and full redemption.

MoneyMatters

So in the past couple of days I have dealt with a few things that have something to do with money, so thought I would just talk about them.

Yesterday, when I was shopping at Tom Thumb, I was in a really long line. I could see there was a girl with no people in her line at the counter in front of me, but she did not wave for me to come on. Then I watched her walk from her counter and go to another area and then come back. Still not indicating she was open. Then a guy just walked up and got in her line and she started checking him out. I didn't say anything but just got in line. During my transaction she left and someone else took over. Rang me up, and I paid and then she said "Did you not scan your Tom Thumb card"? Well, I had not because I usually shop at Albertson's where you don't use the cards anymore. Anyway, she said she would scan it and give me the money and then handed me $27.72. Who would have thought?? So I will make sure I use the card in the future, especially since their prices are usually higher anyway.

Then on Friday I joined LA Fitness. Now who would have thought that joining a Gym as bad as dealing with a car salesman? My mom and I had done our homework and visited several Gyms, knowing that we would rather be at LA Fitness because it was so close. Two other Gyms were waiving their registration fees, so we used that information to get them to do so also. But we sure had to be forceful. The guy said he would have to call his district manager and get permission and that he would probably get in trouble for asking. Yea right! So if they can wave registrations fees why do they charge them in the first place??? Of course the other two places told us "this price is only good for today". Again, yea right.

So today we went to our first water aerobic class and then had our introductory session with a trainer. Dumb me thought the introduction was to show us all the equipment and how to use it. Oh no, it was to get you to buy into having a personal trainer. Once again for $149.00 registration fee and $50.00 per half hour I could have this cute young boy continue to motivate me to a better exercise regimen. I told him I wasn't paying a registration fee and he told me he has never known them to wave it but he would go ask. The manager comes back with him and tells me they can't do that, but they will give me four "free" sessions with the trainer. Still if I were to work out with a trainer 3x a week that would cost me $600.00 a month! I could do it one time a week for $200.00 a month. But then you also have to sign a 6 month contract to get that deal. So guess the bottom line is I will not be working out with a trainer. Went out on the internet to see if I could find descriptions of the different equipment and how to use it but no luck. I guess I will just observe others, but it kind of worries me, as I know there is probably a right way and a wrong way to do it, but it is not worth $200.00 a month to find out.

Astrology-Southern Style

This morning in Bible class the lesson was on Numbers 13 and the things that God finds detestable, one of them being astrology, but I am hoping this is just considered fun and not offensive to God.

OKRA (Dec 22 - Jan 20)
Are tough on the outside but tender on the Inside. Okras have tremendous
influence. An older Okra can look back over his life and see the seeds of
his influence everywhere. You can do something good each day if you try.

CHITLIN (Jan 21 - Feb 19)
Chitlins come from humble backgrounds. A Chitlin, however, will make
something of himself if he is motivated and has lots of seasoning. In
dealing with Chitlins, be careful, they may surprise you. They can erupt
like Vesuvius. Chitlins are best with Catfish and Okra.

BOLL WEEVIL (Feb 20 - March 20)
You have an overwhelming curiosity. You're unsatisfied with the surface of
things, and you feel the need to bore deep into the interior of everything.
Needless to say, you are very intense and driven as if you had some inner
hunger. You love to stay busy and tend to work too much. Nobody in their
right mind is going to marry you, so don't worry about it.

MOON PIE (March 21 - April 20)
You're the type that spends a lot of Time on the front porch. A cinch to
recognize the physical appearance of Moon Pies. Big and round are the key
words here. You should marry anybody who you can get remotely interested in
the idea. It's not going to be easy. You always have a big smile and are
happy. This might be the year to think about aerobics. Maybe not.

POSSUM (April 21 - May 21)
When confronted with life's difficulties, Possums have a marked tendency to
withdraw and develop a don't-bother-me-about-it attitude. Sometimes you
become so withdrawn, people actually think you're dead. This strategy is
probably not psychologically healthy but seems to work for you. You are a
rare breed. Most folks love to watch you work and play. You are a night
person and mind your own business.

CRAWFISH (May 22 - June 21)
Crawfish is a water sign. If you work in an office, you're hanging around
the water cooler. Crawfish prefer the beach to the mountains, the pool to
the golf course, and the bathtub to the living room. You tend not to be
particularly attractive physically, But you have a very, very good head.

COLLARDS (June 22 - July 23)
Collards have a genius for communication. They love to get in the melting
pot of life and share their essence with The essence of those around them.
Collards make good social workers, psychologists, and baseball managers. As
far as your personal life goes, If you are Collards, stay away from
Crawfish. It just won't work. Save Yourself a lot of heartache.

CATFISH (July 24 - Aug 23)
Catfish are traditionalists in matters of The heart, although one's whiskers
may cause problems for loved ones. You Catfish are never easy people to
understand. You run fast. You work and play hard. Even though you prefer the
muddy bottoms to the clear surface of life, you are liked by most. Above all
else, Catfish should stay away from Moon Pies.

GRITS (Aug 24 - Sept 23)
Your highest aim is to be with others like yourself. You like to huddle
together with a big crowd of other Grits. You love to travel though, so
maybe you should think about joining a club. Where do you like to go?
Anywhere they have cheese, gravy, bacon, butter, or eggs and a good time. If
you can go somewhere where they have all these things, that serves you well.
You are pure in heart.

BOILED PEANUTS (Sept 24 - Oct 23)
You have a passionate desire to help your fellow man. Unfortunately, those
who know you best, your friends and loved ones, may find that your
personality is much too salty, and their criticism will affect you deeply
because you are really much softer than you appear. You should go right
ahead and marry anybody you want to because in a certain way, yours is a
charmed life. On the road of life, you can be sure that people will always
pull over and stop for you.

BUTTER BEAN (Oct 24 - Nov 22)
Always invite a Butter Bean to a party because Butter Beans get along well
with everybody. You, as a Butter Bean, should be proud. You've grown on the
vine of life, and you feel at home no matter what the setting. You can sit
next to anybody. However, you, too, shouldn't have anything to do with Moon
Pies.

ARMADILLO (Nov 23 - Dec 21)
You have a tendency to develop a tough exterior, but you are actually quite
gentle and kind inside. A good evening for you? Old friends, a fire, some
roots, fruit, worms, and insects. You are a throwback. You're not concerned

somewhat kinky mating possibility.

Better Times

Yesterday day, my mom and I went to see the movie "The Secret Life of Bees". I had not done a lot of research about the movie, which I usually do before watching a movie. I had seen the trailers and watched a little of the interview with the actresses on Oprah. First of all let me say the acting in this movie was really good. Queen Latifah, Dakota Fanning, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson and Sophie Okonedo were all wonderful and it would be hard to say who did the best. But what I wasn't prepared for (since I had not read the book) was the subject matter of this movie. I thought it was about child abuse and it was, but was not prepared for the racial discrimination theme throughout the movie.

I just wonder in the year 2008 what it is like to be African American and make a movie like this one, or for that matter to just watch a movie like this one. I am not sure that brining up so horrible memories of our history helps bring healing. Although in this movie a group of black women befriend a white girl, the white people were so very cruel to the African Americans.

I lived in Mobile, Alabama during the 60's. I was there from the 5th-8th grades. When I was in 7th grade, they integrated our schools. I remember "white only" water fountains and restuarants. I remember being in one when a black man and a young boy were denied entrance. I don't know that I remembered that there were also separate entrances and seating places in the movie theater. I know it was a big deal when Rosa Parks would not go to the back of the bus. It makes me realize that we have come a long way. These memories also made me realize why it really is a big deal that we have an African American running for president. I just wish it was someone more like Alan Keyes (who is actually running as well but we did not have him on our ballot in Texas).

One thing this movie did make me think about is where were Christians during this dark time in our country? Did they stand up for social injustice? Would I have? While I lived in California I had a dear friend named Rubin White (who was black) and she was an intern during the Johnson administration. She had to take a test to qualify for the internship and was beaten in the bathroom by a group of white girls.
Her father was actually murdered by the Klu Klux Clan and she told the story of how he gathered her at his bedside and told his family to not let Satan win by hating the men that did this to him. One of those men was an elder in the church of Christ.

God's heart must just break to see what we do to one another when His love does not rule our prejudices. I pray that those days are over, but unfortunately you still get glimpses of them today. My greater prayer is that I will not be an onlooker, but that I will love unconditionally and if called to do so stand up and be a defender of what is right.

Heaven Celebration

Not as often as I should, but sometimes I just can't help but think what a wonderful scene we are going to have when we get to heaven. Yesterday's post about the scene in Revelation 7:9-10 reminded me of a song we sing sometimes in worship. I didn't realize the song actually was us singing scripture. I think next time it will give it more meaning. However...I can't wait until we all stand, kneel, lie prostrate around the lamb Himself and sing.

Salvation belongs to our God
Who sits upon the throne
And unto the Lamb

Praise and glory
Wisdom and thanks
Honor and power and strength
Be to our God forever and ever
Be to our God forever and ever

And we the redeemed shall be strong
In purpose and unity
Declaring aloud...

Stepping Up

In Ladies Bible Class we are doing the Beth Moore study "Stepping Up". If you have never done a Beth Moore study, you do not know what you are missing. She just takes your heart places it has never been before. "Stepping Up" is a study of the Psalms of Ascent, which are Psalms 120 - 134. It occurs to me that I have missed out, being raised in the church of Christ, on celebrations. As a heritage, we have minimized most celebrations stating that every Sunday is a celebration. While that is true, there were still just special times of celebration that the Jews participated in and looked forward to. So in the Psalms of Ascent, Beth Moore shows us the Feast of Unleavened Bread, Feast of Weeks, Feast of Tabernacles. But the fascinating thing about this study is how she takes these particular feasts and shows us how Jesus celebrated each of them in His life and especially what He said in the midst of those celebrations that made so much more sense of His "I Am" statements.

In the Feast of Unleavened Bread she made these comparisons:

Day One - Passover - observed as a Sabbath
Day Two - Beginning of the Feast of Unleavened Bread - observed as a Sabbath
Day Three - offering of firstfruits of the harvest to the LORD
Day One - Passover - Jesus becomes our Passover lamb
Day Two - Beginning of the Feast of Unleavened Bread - Jesus’ body lies without corruption and awaits His return
Day Three - Offering of Firstfruits - Jesus’ resurrection

The Feast of Weeks also have ties with Jesus. Beth tells us that its commemoration on the 50th day earned it the Greek name of Pentecost in the New Testamant.
I had always thought that “Pentecost” was just a name Christians made up to refer to what happened in Acts. I had no idea it was an Old Testament festival celebrated by the Jews (and, therefore, Jesus) each year. But the Day of Pentecost is the first day of the Feast of Weeks.

To tie it back in with the Feast of Unleavened Bread and Firstfruits, Exodus 23:16 refers to the Feast of Weeks (or PENTECOST)as the Feast of the HARVEST.

This feast is all about celebrating God and His faithfulness with joy. Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread occurred in the early spring. The Feast of Weeks occurred in early summer. This feast occurred in our late September or early October.

In the Feast of the Tabernacles there is a strong emphasis on Messiah. This particular feast, moreso than any other, had a strong emphasis on the Messiah. Beth tells us that Psalms 113-118 are called the Hallel. They were always sung on Passover and at the Feast of Tabernacles. Jesus and the disciples finished the Last Supper by singing Psalm 118. This was the time of year when the Jews expectation of the Messiah was the highest. The term “hosanna” means “save now” - in other words, “Send Messiah!”

Beth shows us two scriptures that unequivocally link this aspect of the feast to Jesus. First, in Leviticus 23:33-44 God is giving Moses instructions on how to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. In verse 40 He says:

On the first day you are to take choice fruit from the trees, and palm fronds, leafy branches and poplars, and rejoice before the LORD your God for seven days.

In Matthew 21:1-9 we read about Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem for His last Passover feast. Verses 8 and 9 tell us:

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of Him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna (Send Messiah!) to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord! Hosanna (Send Messiah!) to the highest!”

Beth says that the moment Jesus was introduced as Messiah this way began the Feast of Tabernacles, regardless of the season. The time of year no longer mattered. Messiah was here. The Feast of Tabernacles had begun.

Beth also explains that part of the Feast of Tabernacles (and, really, all the feasts) would have included the campsites of thousands of pilgrims who had come to Jerusalem for the feast. All the Israelites would have encamped around the city, with their tabernacles lit every night by candlelight. Beth compares the Israelites feelings when seeing these lights to our feelings when we see Christmas lights.

The celebration of water pouring was the pinnacle of the feast. It took place on the final day. Priests would gather water from the Pool of Siloam and then pour it out before the Lord in the temple (incidentally, while DANCING!!). While they were doing this, the people would be yelling - YELLING - Psalm 118:25: “Save now, I pray, O LORD! Hosanna!”

She then guides us through Jesus’ actions during the Feast of the Tabernacles in John 7 and 8. John 7 in my NIV translation actually has the heading “Jesus Goes to the Feast of Tabernacles.” In John 7:37 we read:

On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” (Isaiah 12:3)

Jesus would have been making this proclamation as the people were celebrating and shouting “Save now!”

John 8:12 takes us to the day after the feast, when the people are packing up their tents, putting out their lights, and heading home. It is during this setting that Jesus says:

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

I am very familiar with these words, and have thought they were just nice descriptions (good visuals) But now that I know why He was using these terms, and there was actual Biblical meaning behind them, not just allegory, it makes it even more powerful.

Finally, there will also be a Feast of Tabernacles in heaven. God descended to us so we could ascend to Him. Everything is about men dwelling with God. Palm fronds always represent the Feast of Tabernacles. Revelation 7:9-10 says:

After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.”

I am thinking that perhaps I should spend some more time studying the feasts so that I will totally appreciate the feast in Heaven one day.

We went and voted today. In all my years of voting, I had never seen such long lines. It only took about 15 minutes, but there was constant traffic. Felt sorry for the guy who had to make sure we were standing in line correctly and telling people they could not be on their cell phones. Not sure I had ever seen the sign prohibiting cell phones within 100 feet of the polls, but...there it was. Anyway, this is also the first time that I just felt it was a waste of time to vote. Just wish there was some way to send the message to Washington that we are all tired of the current way things are run. There has to be a better way.

Thought it was interesting today on one of the Game Shows the question was whose copy of the Koran did the first muslim Senator use to be sworn in with: Theodore Rooselvelt, John F. Kennedy, Thomas Jefferson or Abraham Lincoln. Even though the muslim Senator Keith Ellison was sworn in January 2007, he used a copy of Thomas Jefferson's Koran, which he just had in his library. Just found that to be an interesting piece of trivia.

My husband

Good Thing or Bad Thing

This month in the Reader's Digest there was an article about how by a landslide Obama is the candidate of choice by 17 nations. Is that a good thing? Do we neccessarily want a candidate that is endorsed by Russia? Here are some quotes from the article.

"It's a good thing for John McCain that only American citizens can vote in U.S. presidential elections. If the election were held overseas, or even in the rest of North America, the Republican nominee wouldn't stand a chance.

Didn't have a whole lot to say on my own today. Went to the McKinney Trade Days and wore myself out. So...I found this artcile by Danny Sims from Altamesa Church of Christ and thought I would post it in hopes that it might bless someone. I found this article on www.heartlight.org.

Billy Graham

Friday is Steve and my date day, so today we went out to eat lunch at TGI Friday's and to see the movie Billy. First of all let me say how kind my husband is to not make me feel stupid when I do stupid things. I had spent some time trying to find a restaurant discount for us in my new Passport book, but nothing sounded very good and then I remembered I had a 20% off at TGI Friday's. As we are waiting for our food to come I tell Steve "that coupon expires today", he looks at it and says "no it doesn't, this is October and this expired in September". Oh brother! All my efforts to save us some money for naught. Fortunately, I really enjoyed my chicken Parmesan with tortellini.

We then went to see Billy, which was about the early years of Billy Graham. I thought it was interesting to see how he got his start, but we both didn't think the movie was a quality film. The guy that played Billy Graham just did not seem much like him to me, unless in his early years he went around with this really geeky smile all the time? Lindsey Wagner played his mother and it took me about the first quarter of the movie to realize it was her because she was so aged. Billy's life is told from the viewpoint of Charles Templeton who was a contemporary evangelist of Billy Graham's who becomes an agnostic after he struggled understanding how a loving God would allow millions of people to die at Auschwitz. If the movie was true, several times in his younger years Billy was told he did not have the talent to preach and probably would not amount to much. Wonder what those people think now? Wonder why he rose beyond those expectations? Perhaps because he listened to the call of God over the opinions of others?? I am sure it helped having parents and a wife who did believe in him. I think it is hard for all of us to realize that our identity is in Christ and not what other's think of us. But if we are faithful to God's call, He will always give us the strength to complete the work He has designed for us to do.

Thank You

Thank you for your prayers for my colonoscopy. God answered them. I had a clear report and don't have to have another one for ten years! Yeah! If you haven't had one yet, the worse part is drinking the "stuff" you have to drink every 10 minutes for 2 hours. I found putting orange flavor in it helped me the most (after trying lemon-lime, lemon, and strawberry-kiwi. Several people had told me that they had no memory of their colonoscopy, including my Steve, so imagine my surprise when I laid and watched the screen the entire time and saw the inside of my colon. It was rather cool, but I was thankful that I could not feel anything. The worse part of the procedure today was the nurse that could not find a vein for the IV, she killed me with that needle. The 2nd nurse came in and found it immediately!

Because I did not know exactly what was going to happen and did think it would be similar to surgery where the anesthesia put me completely out, I was a little anxious. I find going under anesthesia unnerving and I think that is because you are totally out of control. I had about 15 minutes in my room by myself before they took me back (they wouldn't let Steve go back with me). I found myself singing and praying and just asking God to still my soul and let me feel His presence. I sat here this afternoon and reflected back on the peace that gave me and just wondered how those that don't have the promises of my God calm themselves or find peace.

In this month's issue of "Does God Exist" by John Clayton he talks about the different seasons of life and what they looked like from the standpoint of an atheist, which he was and his parents remained to be, and from the standpoint of a Christian, which he is now. He said the biggest difference in him was that he no longer fears death. He thinks it is the biggest difference he sees in all Christians is that they face the future with hope instead of anxiousness and worry.
Even right now with the financial crisis, since our treasure is laid up in heaven and not on earth, we can rest that God will be faithful to His promise to "supply all of our needs."

I am thankful on this day and every other that I love a God who is faithful to His promises and that I can always trust Him to supply the answer for whatever need I have. I pray more and more I will just relinquish control and always let my God be God.

No Time To Blog

I have out of town company and am prepping for a colonoscopy tomorrow, so no time to blog today. Not looking forward to the colonoscopy. If you have a few minutes to offer a prayer for normal results, I would appreciate it.

How Horrible

I was sent these pictures on Saturday and could not imagine what it must have been like to have been at the Albuquerque Balloon Festival and to have seen this happen. Especially if you had been family on the ground. It must have been horrible. Steve went to an airshow Saturday and a similar tragedy could have happened before his eyes. Guess it is the risk everyone takes.


I have thought it would be neat to go to this event. Although, I am not sure I would want to deal with the crowds. I like the fun shaped balloons which I tend to enjoy more than the regular ones, although they are pretty colorful.

Congratulations Aly

My neice Aly was crowned Homecoming Queen in Olympia, Washington last night. She was so surprised. We are so proud of her. I know I am prejudiced, but I thought she looked beautiful!

Surrender

I don't know about you but one of the spiritual struggles I have is in surrendering total control to God. Seems like I do okay for a while, but I always seem to eventually grab whatever back. Guess I am a slow learner, because me being in control never works. My sister Caren gave me a piece of framed art almost 20 years ago that I still have hanging in my bedroom because I constantly need to be reminded of the message that is on it:

Last night I was listening to my Ipod as I went to sleep and the very first song was Surrender by the Barlow Girls. The words once again spoke to my heart. I pray that I will eventually learn this lesson with my God and say with my whole heart "I Surrender All."

Presidential Race

I watched the Presidential debate last night and thought to myself "did we hear anything new?" It seemed to me it was the same old rhetoric. I am trying not to worry about this election and to trust that God will put into power the person who should be there. The scary part to me, is that He will not necessarily put the person in who is the most godly. It could be that He gives America what we are asking for and then teaches us hard lessons as He did in the Old Testament when His people clamored for a king.

But, I am just amazed to find out that there are actually 11 other candidates for President that we have not head about, not to mention about another 50 who are running as Independents, because in America any citizen over the age of 35 can run for president. Nevertheless, did you know there are other parties besides the Republican and Democrat party? Here are some of them: Constitutional Party, Libertarian Party, Boston Tea Party, Green Party, Independent Party, Prohibition Party, Reform Party, Socialist Party, Party of Socialism and Liberation, Socialist Worker's Party and finally the Marijuana Party.

Seems to me it would be more interesting to at least have a debate with the the Constitutionalists, Liberationist, and Independents along with the Republican and Democrat. The hard thing is knowing you don't like the Republican or Democrat but to vote for anyone else right now is throwing away your vote. I would just like to have a better choice.

Smokers Hack

Today I was sitting at the eye doctor waiting to drive Steve home since he was getting his eyes dilated. While there, a man came in who was probably in his 60's that was constantly coughing, but not a cold cough (thank goodness or I would be getting sick) but an obvious smoker's hack (you instantly recognize that). As I was feeling smug and thinking to myself "why would anyone subject themselves to that, hasn't he heard about lung cancer?" the finger came back to me,and the voice "for the same reason you over eat, haven't you heard that causes heart attacks". Ouch! A vice is a vice. Don't you just hate it when truth hits you between the eyes?

Jesus verses Satan

Today I was reading a past issue of Pray magazine and there was an article that is a good followup to my post yesterday on spiritual warfare.

"Sometimes we forget exactly who the enemy is and is not. Scripture clearly tells us who Satan is by the names it assigns him, especially when contrasted to the names given to Jesus. The contrast not only details their respective missions and mandates but also shows us exactly us exactly who deserves our awe and attention.
-Satan in Hebrew means 'adversary', Jesus means 'saviour'
-The devil is called our 'enemy', Jesus is known as 'the friend of sinners'
-The 'dragon' is defeated by the victorious 'lamb'
-'Belial'--the worthless one--is a pathetic contrast to the one to whom all the saints cry 'Worthy'
-The 'murderer's' work is undone by the one who is not only 'the giver of life' but 'the resurrection'
-The 'father of lies' is impotent before the 'truth'
-The 'thief's' mission is ever thwarted by the 'the Giver of every good and perfect gift'
-The 'prince of the world' has no authority over the 'King of kings'
-The 'prince of the power of the air' must submit to the one who is 'above all government, authority, power and dominion'
-The 'destroyer's' works are destroyed by the 'Son of God'
-The 'tempter' tries to ensnare us while the 'deliverer' came to save us
-We are either children of the 'evil one' or of the 'heavenly Father'
-We choose to live under the authority of either the 'god of this passing age' or the 'Alpha and Omega, who was and is, and is to come'
-We follow either 'Beelzebub'(the 'lord of the flies') or the 'God of the living'

The Lord created us to fear only Him. When we fear the enemy, we don't just forfeit our peace--we ultimately give him the attention he seeks. Our worry, anxiety, and torment are the corrupt, distorted worship he craves. Instead of giving him this pleasure we can defeat him by offering prayers of worship to God. He alone deserves our holy reverential fear in the form of awe and wonder."

Sunday Snippet

Today our minister started a new series called Kingdomnomics. His text today was Psalms 24 and he reminded us that everything belongs to the Lord. He challenged us to change our language this week and instead of using "my" or "our" we replace them with God's, for example "God's House", "God's car","God's children", etc. Wonder why this is not already natural conversation for us?

Tonight we had an interesting discussion in our Life Group on Spiritual Warfare. I think it is interesting how little time we spend thinking about the warfare that is going on for our soul. While I think it is wise to be aware that Satan is looking for the chink in our armor, (1 Peter 5:8)I find comfort in knowing if we are covered with the blood of Jesus that He is powerless, the only power He has is the power we surrender to Him. It was interesting that we had several people that did not know Satan is not omnipresent, or all knowing. I think He takes great delight when he, the father of lies (John 8:44), has us convinced that he is a great as God. I am thankful that God tells us in Ephesians 6 how we can arm ourselves against the attacks of Satan and has promised us with every temptation he will provide us a way out (I Cor. 10:13)But I do think it is important that realize everyday there is a battle going on between good and bad, but we can also rejoice that we have seen the end of the story and we live in all confidence that good wins. I think it was in a Carmen video where Satan was getting an update from one of his demons on whether his plan was working or not and he tells the demon that they way he will "get" the humans is to keep reminding them of their past, and the demon says "how is that going to work they will just remind you of your future" Cha-ching.

Another Tiring Day

So...it was not the smartest decision to go to Canton yesterday, when I knew I had volunteered to help my friend Sandy all day today. She has a franchise of Just Between Friends and I volunteered to help check people out.

If you are a mom reading this blog and don't know about Just Between Friends you can go to www.jbfsale.com and you can find out all you would want to know. But basically this is a consignment sale for all things baby and maternity. Not only can you find great clothing, toys, and sundries at great prices but you can sell all of your gently used items and make back some of that money you paid for your child to wear that outfit once or twice. They give you back 65% of the profits and if you volunteer they will give you 70%, plus as a volunteer you get to shop the presale before everything is picked over. This was only their 2nd sale but they doubled their consigners. So the amazing thing was seeing all the stuff 50 people brought together (the number of consigners for this sale) The entire room was filled to the brim. I think I counted 20 racks full of clothes and some of those had double rows!
Guess they have franchises all over North Texas, so you might want to check it out.

Last night I went to bed at 10:00 which was amazingly early for me. As I finish this it is 8:30 and I am on my way. It must be a record!!

1st Monday at Canton

So one of the things I had not done since my accident that I have been wanting to do is go to Canton. I have always loved shopping for the one of a kind types of things you can find at Canton. Today the love affair lost it's flair.

First of all, dumb me just drove like I thought I knew where I was going until after 90 minutes things were just not looking familiar and I realized I was on I-30, not I-20. Thanks to the Garmin it took me down a side road and I was only 24 miles out of the way. Then when we got there the guy sent me to what I thought was handicap parking, but I could not find any. We did luck out and found a place close to where you rent scooters, only the lady is front of me was getting the last one. I wanted to offer her money for hers, she didn't look like she needed it anyway, but I just gave her this puppy dog look that said "don't I look like I need it more than you?", but she must have not thought so, because she just rode off with no hesitation. Of course there were 100 more scooter's round that place and not one person got off theirs and offered it to me. How rude was that???

So, I actually used my walker and spent 6 hours walking around Canton!!! I had to sit a little every hour to make it, but I did make it. I do have to complain a little more though in that I think it is sad there are so many rude people. They don't look you in the eye and just bowl you over with those scooters or rolling carts. No one says "excuse me" much less "sorry". I could not help but wonder if I was that rude before my accident, just oblivious to those who are handicapped.

So part of the negative of retirment is having to scale back and be on retirment income. Couldn't just splurge on whatever I wanted, as now there are budgets. Really wanted a beautiful floral arrangement for my dining room table, but $90.00 was more than my budget. I also was looking for a mirror to go over my entry way table, but no look. I came home with some dips and sauces for holiday parties, and several packages of soups. There is a company called All Of Us: Old Plantation Soups and Dips, and I love their soups, the Chicken Enchilada is the best, but I also like the Vegetable, Chicken and Vaquero. Nothing better than a good bowl of soup and fresh salad during the winter months.

Anyway...I think I will sleep really well tonight...if I can only get up out of my chair and make it to my bed :)

An Ahhhhh moment

So today I was reading Mike Cope's blog and this is what he said:
"Yesterday I spoke at the funeral for one of our members, who died at the age of 92.

He’d been there on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Omaha Beach.

There are certain moments you experience only from the perspective the minister has. His wife of 72 years walked by the casket after everyone had left the sanctuary, patted him on the hand, and said, “I’ll see you later, Sweetheart.”

Can you imagine being married for 72 years!!!!! Just made me say "oh how sweet".
What a wonderful perpective, all confidence and security in knowing that she will be with him and probably very soon if he was 92, she must be close. May we all love our mates more and enjoy our years together, helping keep each other's eyes on the Lord so we can say at parting "see you later, Sweetheart."
